Genetically Modified Organisms

Biotechnology is being commonly used to improve the existing quality, safety, nutrition values, production, consumption, waste management and environmental threats of food being consumed by laymen. Most of the commodities available in market (maize, soybean, oilseed rape) these days have been some how modified through this technologies. GMO is the abbreviation of Genetically Modified Organisms It is the most talked about topic amongst health concerned individuals. When an organism is genetically altered using molecular genetic techniques, it’s called GMO.

Gene cloning where a non-native gene is set up and articulated in a new organism and protein engineering are a few methods for GMO. This ellipsis is experimented on plants, microorganisms and animals. This method is becoming very popular for growing extra crops, improving nutritional values and fighting pest. There has been an on going argument about safety of genetically modified organisms products. In my opinion it is perfectly safe to consume GMO products. This biotechnology can actually reduce the health risk of food that we intake.

It helps in improving crop yield and tweaks certain nutritionist properties. Moreover the DNA of a certain food product we have is already broken once in the process of digestion and in no way harm or affects human DNA. GMO is a process to reduce the adverse effect of pesticide on crops and on humans. According to FDA most of the food that we intake in our daily appetite are already genetically changed to a great extend (Eatright, 2006). Instead of being harmful it can be used to add nutrients to plants and crops.

It can also add proteins found in meat to plans. Plants treated with pesticides are more harmful then GMO. In contrast with GMO products that improves nutritional quality of food like in case of Golden Rice which contains high content of Vitamin A. It can also reduce the percent of toxic compounds and allergens that are found in certain food products. It also increases the supplement of reasonable food items and the removal of toxic compounds that could be found in soil. FDA keeps a strict check on all the bioengineered foot products.

It has also issued certain guidelines that evaluates food safety of GMO products and ensures a strict the following of biotechnology policy. It does have its own disadvantages too. But it has nothing to do with being a danger to human lives. With the use of GMOs small farmers lose their source of earning, the natural form of agriculture is modified into industrialization of crops and it will create a great hindrance for all the third world countries whose main source of income is exporting their agricultural crops to different states of the world. After a lot of research it has been declared by many scientists and FDA commissioner state that seeds and crops produced through biotechnologies are equally safe as compared to traditional grown crops (Thompson, Larry, 2002). On going researches are being carried out to develop increased nutritionist qualities. Not yet single evidence has been available from any part of the world about horrific consequences of GMO food or crops on humans, environment or animal for that matter. It is strongly assessed by different scientists. There has been a constant increase in funding of scientific research projects.
