Patients are also exposed to some of the preventive behaviors such as wearing seat belts, taking part in screening tests and the practice of safe sex. Some of the health promotion behaviors taught to the include health diet and stress management. This preventive and health promotion of behavior results into decreased health risks resulting from the risk behaviors. For example in the year 2002 risky smoking and drinking dropped from 40 – 25% and from 7- 4% respectively. Cholesterol and hypertension dropped by 66% and 33 % respectively.
These changes in the health behavior have a general effect on mortality. This is because they decrease in the occurrence and effects of the disease results into decreased or dropped mortality rates (Nber. org, 2010) Health behavior change measures can however be barred by deficits in skill, deficits related to knowledge organizational barriers an d attitudinal barriers. The health care delivery system can however do away with some of these organizational barriers by providing funds that will assist in reimbursement of the patient’s education, preventive services and counseling.
There should also be increased involvement of agency staff in health promotion services and patient education. These barriers to health risk behavior intervention are brought about by lack of knowledge and skills of effective communication. Health communication educates consumers on the various methods of gaining access to health care systems and public health care systems. Health communication lift the awareness of health risks, offers skills and motivation required to reduce the risks. Health communication also increases demand for suitable health services and reduce demand for unsuitable health services.
It can provide handy information that can assist in the making of intricate choices, the selection of health plans, treatments and care providers. In the community, health communication can assist in the influencing of the public agenda, support programs and policies, promote affirmative transformation in the physical and socioeconomic environments, develop the delivery of health care services and public heath system, and hearten societal norms that boost health and value of life (Healthypeople. gov,2010).
