MDMA in the body

The long-term effects of MDMA in the body are complex. What the abusers do not recognize is that MDMA is a dangerous drug that affects the overall health of an individual. For instance, it alters the body temperatures regulating mechanisms leading to overheating of the body and dehydration. The nerves that trigger the control of the body temperature are disabled in such a way that their normal functioning is curtailed. MDMA can have many physical effects just like other stimulant drugs such cocaine. This includes increased heart rate and blood pressure, muscle tension, involuntary teeth clenching, nausea, blurred vision, faintness and chills or sweating.

Therefore, high doses MDMA can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate temperature hence leading to hyperthermia (Pearce, 2010). This can consequently result to liver as well as kidney and cardiovascular system failure where death can easily occur. As reported earlier, many users of MDMA mixes the drug with other substances such as alcohol or marijuana. The mixture can be of greater danger to their health than when used as a single stimulant. This is a drug that affects the brain neurons that use the chemical serotonin to communicate with other neurons. Serotonin system plays an important role in regulating mood, aggregation, sexual activity, sleep.

MDMA cause excessive release of serotonin from neurons containing the neurotransmitter and it less affects on neurons that contain dopamine and nor epinephrine. The mixture of the drug with other substance may lead to some negative effects from the ingredients that have been taken with other drugs. MDMA has lead to unexplainable deaths especially among the young people who use the drug. The law recognizes MDMA as a first class drug. This means that it is an illegal to have it, give it away, or even sell it. Possession can make a person end up in life time imprisonment and unlimited fines

A single dose of MDMA causes psychological effects last approximately 3-6 hours. These effects include alertness, heightened sense of touch and euphoria. Immediate negative responses can also occur such as the headaches, jaw clenching, blurred visions, nausea and mental problems (NIDA, 2010). There have also been cases of increased instances of high blood pressure.

Every single dose can have a life threatening effects on a person who uses this drug. Such a dose can have a long lasting damage of the nerve terminals and axons which are very important constituents of central nervous system. The drug causes degradation of nerve terminals and axons that secrete the neurotransmitter called serotonin. Specific damage in this case is observed in the brain of human MDMA users. Therefore, long and short term effects of MDMA relate to its ability to increase the amount of neurotransmitter in the synapse. Due to the similarities in chemical structure of the MDMA drug and neuron-transmitter chemicals, the drug replaces several neurotransmitters messaging whereby they interferes with neurotransmitters  with the axon terminal.
